2016 2oz Queen Beasts The Lion of England Silver Coin
The 2016 Queens’s Beast Lion of England Silver coin is first release in the 10 coin Queen Beast series from the Royal Mint.
The Queen’s Beasts are the ten statues that stood guard for the Queen’s Coronation as chiseled by James Woodford RA in 1953. The Queen’s Beasts are still standing, currently housed at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, Canada, and the stone replicas can be found in Kew Gardens.
When Her Majesty The Queen was crowned in 1953, the entrance to Westminster Abbey was guarded by ten fantastical creatures and the coins were minted to celebrate and symbolise the centuries-long tradition. The Queen’s Beasts coin collection started in the year 2016, the year Her Majesty the Queen became the world’s longest-reigning living monarch.
