The 2018 ten ounces silver Valiant coin is inspired by the tale of St. George and the dragon, the world-famous legend has been attributed to Saint George since the 12th century. The best-known version of the myth is based on the ‘Golden Legend’. According to the story, St. George and his knights, Maurice, Theodore and Demetrius arrive in the town of Silene in Libya to find that a princess and her subjects are prisoners of a venomous dragon. St. George captures the beast by throwing his belt around its neck before slaying it with his lance.
This really superb coin on the reverse features Etienne Milner’s unique interpretation of this well-known myth showing St. George on horseback, lance poised and ready to strike while the dragon writhes at his feet. The Valiant is the Royal Mint’s first silver bullion coin to feature an incuse design and an additional frosted finish ensures that every intricate detail stands out.
The obverse of the coin bears Jody Clark’s definitive ‘fifth coinage portrait’ of HM Queen Elizabeth II against the mint’s elegant new guilloche background.
