Bullion Gold Sovereign vs Proof vs Brilliant Uncirculated

Most of the modern-day Gold Sovereigns are minted in three different finishes: Bullion, Proof, and Brilliant Uncirculated. The fineness, weight, gold content, and dimensions of all three finishes are the same. The difference lies in the actual finish of the coins.

Bullion Gold Sovereign Coins

The Gold Bullion finish coins are struck by machine using die press method only once. As the striking method is only done once the resulting design can suffer from minor imperfections.  Gold Bullion coins however are a popular choice for precious metal investors as the coins are priced with the lowest markup and can be bought close to the spot price of the gold. Value of gold is dependent on the market fluctuation and varies according to the current spot price.

Proof Gold Sovereign Coins

Proof Gold Sovereign CoinsGold Sovereign coins finished in the Proof finish are virtually handmade with a mirror-like surface. The process involves striking the Gold Sovereign coin multiple times (up to 6 times) to ensure a much detailed design texture, handled with the utmost care and inspected closely for any imperfection. Only a very limited number of  Proof Gold Sovereigns are minted. Proof coins are generally presented in a display case with an accompanying certificate. The extra production and presentation process adds a substantial premium over the gold metal price and the coin is sold for more than its metal content. The future value however can vary depending on the scarcity or demand of the coin.

Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) Gold Sovereign Coins

Brilliant Uncirculated Gold Coins or commonly known as BU are considered coins that have finish somewhere in between Bullion and Proof coins. The Gold Sovereign BU finish coins are struck a minimum of two times to imprint a better clarity of the gold coin’s design. The BU Sovereign Gold Coins are then cleaned by hand and each coin is inspected closely for any imperfection. The BU coins tend to be cheaper than their Proof counterpart.
